Abstract

Rethinking the Role of Industry in Professional Education

Engineering students in Pakistan often suffer from the vast gap between professional requirements and academic priorities upon recruitment. Additionally, academic, and industrial research interests often focus on diverging aspects. Requirements of the industry are based on the current needs of its production line, business conditions and market dynamics. On the other hand, academia focuses on future possibilities, innovations in manufacturing and a desire for new inventions. In order to bridge this gap, the industry and academia have to engage each other to find common ground.

This paper aims to focus on three distinct ways in which this may be achieved: a) involving students in industry related projects, b) engaging researchers to explore industry specific problems and c) building industrial – academic connections through talks, conferences and symposia. A brief comparison between the U.S. and Pakistani education system will also be drawn with regards to the involvement of industry.
